Eric Belanger

Layer 0 to layer 7 — from the gravel road to the routing table.

I do network and telecom work in Northern Ontario, and the physical side of it too: towers, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic. Behind that is two and a half years running the telecom at a working gold mine, seven years managing contracting crews on mine roads, and my own network company since 2019. English and French.

What I can be hired for

Out here the person who wires a building is usually the same one fixing the generator that feeds it, so I've ended up working every layer of it. Bottom to top:

L0 Ground

Roads, power, steel and dirt

Seven years as general manager of Belnor Contracting, including road maintenance operations for Wesdome Gold Mines — 75 km of gravel road, with the crews, equipment and scheduling behind it. Standby power and panels, hydraulics, and winter site access.

  • Crew & equipment management
  • Electrical
  • Mechanical
  • Hydraulic
  • Generators & standby power
L1 Physical

Tower, cable, fibre, camera

Tower and rooftop work, point-to-point wireless, fibre and structured cabling, racks, power and grounding. Cameras, intercom and access control land here too — same trade, same visit.

Two and a half years as a network technician for Markom, out of Val-d'Or, Québec, setting up and maintaining all the telecommunications at Wesdome Gold Mines.

  • Tower & point-to-point wireless
  • Fibre & structured cabling
  • Racks, power, grounding
  • Cameras / intercom / access control
  • Industrial & mine-site telecom
L2–3 Switch & route

Making it actually route

BGP, transit and peering, switching, firewalls, VPN and site-to-site. I operate my own autonomous system, AS398999. At Davidson Data & Network I designed, built and ran the whole stack — fibre, wireless, routing — along with the carrier agreements, quoting, installs and billing behind it.

  • BGP / AS398999
  • IP transit & peering
  • Routers, switches, firewalls
  • Carrier & circuit procurement
L4–7 Systems

Servers, and the software on top

Servers, virtualization, backups, Microsoft 365 and day-to-day user support, including a couple of years running the network and servers for fiberdrop out of Atlanta, entirely remote.

I also write the software. Sucura's customer panel, provisioning, monitoring and billing are mine end to end.

  • Servers & virtualization
  • Backup & monitoring
  • Microsoft 365 / identity
  • User support
  • Custom software & automation

The company

Sucura Networks Inc.

Canadian-owned network infrastructure. I founded it in 2019 and run it as president. We sell IP transit, DDoS protection, dedicated servers, virtual machines and colocation out of Toronto and eight other points of presence worldwide.

We're currently bringing up our own 100G wavelength between Toronto and Montréal — 540 km, about 13 ms — with a Montréal facility behind it. I also started the Canadian Independent Hosting Alliance, a group for small independent operators who rack their own hardware.
